Infections Caused by Hookworm

 Infections Caused by Hookworm
About a quarter of the world population is infected by hookworm. Infection is most often found in areas with warm and humid, with the level of poor hygiene. Mine worm infections caused by intestinal roundworms, either Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus.
eggs of both worms were found in the feces and hatch in the soil for 1-2 days after hatching. Within a few days, hookworm larvae will be released and live in the soil.

Humans can be infected if walking barefoot on soil contaminated by human feces, because the larvae can penetrate the skin.

Larvae reached the lungs through the lymphatic vessels and blood flow. Then the larvae rise to the respiratory tract and swallowed. Approximately 1 week after admission through the skin, the larvae reach the intestine. Larvae himself with hooks stuck in their mouth into the upper layers of the small intestine and suck blood.
hookworms into the skin when we walk but do not use footwear. worms will enter through the skin and cause itchy skin and prominent (ground itch). Fever, coughing and wheezing breath sounds (wheezing) may also occur akbiat migration of larvae through the lungs.

Adult worms often cause pain in the upper abdomen.
Anemia due to iron deficiency and low levels of protein in the blood can result from intestinal bleeding. Severe blood loss and prolonged, can cause slow growth, heart failure and widespread tissue swelling in children.
The main priority is to correct the anemia by providing iron supplements by mouth or injection of iron. In severe cases blood transfusion may be necessary. If the condition of the patient is stable, given drugs or pamoic pirantel mebendazol for 1-3 days to kill hookworms. This drug should not be given to pregnant women because it can harm the fetus.
